Evaluation question 2

Representation of social groups
___________________________________________________________________________________

1) Age
2) Gender
3) Ethnicity

Throughout the title sequence, we wanted to show to the representation of social groups as well as conform and criticise various stereotypes within our society. Unfortunately the mass media perpetuate and emphasise these stereotypes by broadcasting information to the general public making it seem like social groups have particular have a fixed image/idea.

The first social group we wanted to criticize is the representation of black boys/men(ethnity).The stereotype around black males is that they are all threatening, criminals or involve themselves in gang activities/wrong doings. We as a group collectively decided to use a black female instead of a male to go against the negative perspective of black males in society. In our title sequence, it is a black female (myself) who takes on the role of being the one who indulges herself in wrong doing.
This  is  an example of a stereotypical role that is played  in youth dramas(left) compared to the challenged female role in our media product(right)

We also wanted to criticize the gender stereotype of boys being the ones to involve themselves in gang related activities/wrong doings - I say this because the audience doesn't not know whether or not she is invovled in gang members or why she is being chased . We again did this by deciding to choose a female actress instead of male.

Finally, we decided to use a young school girl to challenge the 'angelic and innocent' stereotype that some people have of young girls. Also, to educate people on the fact that it is not just males who are involved in these activities but also females can get caught up too.
